WORKSHOP STRUCTURE | This is a "+1 workshop," which means it includes both a shared instruction day and one independent working day at the studio. After learning the essential skills during the instruction day, you can book an additional day to explore the technique's possibilities hands-on. The independent day doesn't include formal teaching, but studio staff will be available to assist when needed. The +1 day must be used within two months of the workshop day and is typically scheduled as either one weekday (10 AM - 5 PM) or two consecutive weekday evenings (4 PM - 8 PM).

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN | During the shared day, everyone will work through the same guided exercises using prepared sample images. You'll gain the essential skills for creating your own jacquard design and preparing digital files. You can use your independent day to either weave your own designs or continue practising with sample files.

IMPORTANT | Weaving files are created using Photoshop software. While simple files can be made with free alternatives like Photopea (covered in a separate course), you'll get the most from this workshop by working on your own files during instruction. Please bring your own laptop with Photoshop installed (recommended for the best learning experience). Alternatively, you can follow demonstrations without your own laptop and work on your files at home or even book our studio computer for file creation later.

Note: If you are already relatively familiar with Photoshop or Photopea, you might be able to participate using Photopea. Please get in touch in advance to discuss this possibility.

Not too confident with Photoshop? You definitely don't need to be a Photoshop expert to participate, but even some basic familiarity will make your learning smoother. If you've never used Photoshop before or feel like you need some extra support -no worries. In that case, we recommend scheduling a prep meeting organised remotely via Zoom. To arrange this, please get in touch, for example via email (pirita(at)valitilastudio.org). The content of the prep session can be customised to your background and needs (for example, covering essential tools only, or including techniques like creating repeating patterns). The prep meeting typically lasts 1-3 hours and ensures you'll feel confident with the basic tools needed for the workshop.

• The basic process of digital weaving

• Design - preparing a simple motif for jacquard weaving

• Bindings - drawing satin and twill bindings in Photoshop

• Filling bindings into the design - preparing the weaving file

• Weaving with Thread Controller 2 (TC2)

After registration, you'll receive a detailed course letter by email approximately one week before the workshop, including additional content information and arrival instructions.

THE COURSE FEE is €250 (incl. VAT 25.5%) and it includes one workshop day + written instructions + one independent weaving day + all materials
